Step 1: Review or Add Performance review rating scales

Available for the following plans: Standard, Premium, Platinum, Unlimited
Available for the following User Access levels: Admin

Before launching a review, you must define your measurement criteria. Rating scales allow you to assess employee performance against company values, KPIs, and role-specific competencies via custom scales or pre-built templates.

Getting started

Using Pre-built Rating Scales

Employment Hero provides five ready-to-use rating scales. To explore these options:

  1. Navigate to Performance > Performance reviews.
  2. Select the Review Templates tab and click the Rating Scales button.
  3. Click View Details next to any scale to see its full description and criteria.
Set up Custom Rating Scales

A rating scale provides a consistent yardstick for measuring performance across your organization.

  1. Go to Performance > Performance reviews.
  2. Click the Review Templates tab, then click the Rating Scales button.
  3. Click the + Create Rating Scale button.
  4. In the pop-up, configure the following:
    • Rating Name: Provide a clear title (e.g., "Core Values Scale").
    • Scale Name: Define the level (e.g., "Exceeds Expectations").
    • Description: Explain what an employee must achieve to earn this rating.
  5. Add/Remove Levels:
    • Click Add New to expand your scale.
    • Click the Delete icon (X) next to a level to remove it.
    • Note: You must include a minimum of two rating levels.
  6. Click Save.

Maintain

Edit or Delete Rating Scales

As your organizational focus shifts, you can update or remove existing scales that are not currently in use.

To Edit:

  1. Go to Performance Performance reviews.
  2. Click Review Templates Rating Scales.
  3. Click the three dots in the Actions column and select Edit.
  4. Update levels or descriptions and click Save.

To Delete:

  1. Go to Performance Performance reviews.
  2. Click Review Templates Rating Scales.
  3. Click the three dots in the Actions column and select Delete.
