The Difference: Vacation Time vs. Vacation Pay

Vacation time allows employees to take a break from work. Vacation pay is the compensation (usually a percentage of earnings) that finances that time off.

Vacation Time (The Days Off)

  • Accumulated based on calendar time (e.g., 1 year of work = 2 weeks off).

Vacation Time Exemptions

Some jurisdictions (ON, NS, SK, etc.) allow employees to waive their right to time off under specific circumstances. Consult your local Employment Standards Office before agreeing to exemptions.
