In the Advanced Template Editor, Blocks are essential structural elements that allow you to group text and apply conditional logic. By using blocks, you can create a single master template—such as an employment agreement—that contains different versions of a clause (e.g., specific probation terms for Ontario vs. British Columbia). When you issue the document, you simply select the block that applies to that specific employee.
1. Creating a Content Block
Follow these high-detail steps to add a new structural block to your advanced document.
- Log in to the Employment Hero platform.
- Navigate to the Compliance menu on the left-hand sidebar.
- Click on Template Library and open the required document using the Advanced Editor (Builder).
- Insert a Block: In the editor toolbar, locate and click the Cube icon (Content Block).
-
Configure the Block: A pop-up window will appear. Complete the following:
- Block Group: Enter a name for the block. Use a unique name for standalone text, or use the same name as other blocks if you want them to be mutually exclusive options in a list.
- Optional Checkbox: Tick this box if you want the sender to be able to choose whether this content appears during the document issuing stage.
- Click OK to place the block into the document.
- Finalize: Click Save and Preview at the top of the editor to see how the block appears, then click Return to exit or Edit to continue working.
Helpful Hint
Optional blocks are easy to spot in the editor—they are distinguished by a dotted grey outline. Non-optional blocks have a solid outline and the text is locked to ensure compliance.
2. Maintaining and Moving Blocks
As your documentation requirements change, you can update or reorganize your blocks directly in the builder.
- Navigate to Compliance > Template Library and open your advanced document.
- Locate the Block: Hover your mouse over the specific block you wish to modify.
- Open Settings: Double-click the Grid icon (four small squares) that appears on the block boundary.
- Update your changes in the pop-up window and click OK.
- Click Save and Preview to commit your changes.
- Open the document in the builder via Compliance > Template Library.
- Select the Block: Right-click anywhere within the grey or solid boundary of the block you want to remove.
- Remove: Select the Remove Block button from the context menu.
- Click Save and Preview to finalize the deletion.
3. Troubleshooting and Rules
To ensure your master templates function correctly for Canadian managers, keep these rules in mind:
- Mutual Exclusivity: If multiple optional blocks share the exact same Block Group name, the person issuing the document can only select one of them. This is perfect for listing different provincial salary clauses.
- Nesting Limitation: You cannot create a block inside another block. If you need to group content further, use the Sections feature.
- Moving Blocks: To reorder your document, hover over a block until the directional arrows appear. Click and hold the arrows to drag and drop the block to a new location.
- Visual Outlines: If all your blocks appear to have dotted lines and you are confused, click the Eye icon in the toolbar to toggle between seeing structural lines and the final document view.
